Important Water Quality Alert: TTHM Levels Exceed Safety Standards in Cinco MUD 5 – What You Need to Know

Attention Cinco MUD 5 Residents:

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has issued a notification regarding elevated levels of total trihalomethanes (TTHM) in our drinking water. During 2025 Quarter 1, testing revealed a compliance value of 0.086 mg/L, slightly above the EPA’s Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 0.080 mg/L.

What Are Trihalomethanes (TTHM)?

TTHMs are byproducts formed when chlorine (used for water disinfection) reacts with natural organic matter. While these compounds are common in treated water, prolonged exposure to levels above the MCL may pose health risks, including potential effects on the liver, kidneys, central nervous system, and a possible increased cancer risk.

What Should You Do?

  1. No Immediate Action Required: The water remains safe for general use, but if you have health concerns (e.g., pregnancy, chronic illness), consult your doctor.
  2. Stay Informed: Share this notice with neighbors, especially those in apartments, nursing homes, or schools.
  3. Monitor Updates: Cinco MUD 5 is actively tracking TTHM levels and will provide updates.

Pickup of Garbage Missed on March 17

Collection of garbage was missed on several streets in Cinco 5 on Monday, March 17 due to breakdown of some GFL trucks. GFL will be back out this morning to collect anything that was missed, so if garbage was not collected at your home yesterday, please leave it out today (Tuesday, March 18) for collection.

As we approach the end of the year, property owners within Cinco Municipal Utility District No. 5 should be aware of the upcoming public hearing on the proposed tax rate for the 2024 tax year. Scheduled for September 10, 2024, at 4:30 pm at Willow Fork Country Club in Katy, Texas, this hearing is a vital opportunity for residents to understand potential changes to their property taxes and how these changes might affect them.

Key Highlights:

  1. Proposed Tax Rate Reduction: The proposed tax rate for 2024 is $0.3100 per $100 of value, down from last year’s rate of $0.3550 per $100 of value. This represents a significant decrease of 12.68%, reflecting efforts to manage tax burdens effectively.

Resumption of Normal Trash Collections during week of July 22, 2024

GFL is making progress with collections after Hurricane Beryl. Starting the week of July 22, GFL will resume collection of yard waste and recycling. Cinco 5 assures its residents that GFL is working on a large volume of heavy garbage and trying to get back to normal. You can help GFL provide better collections by following weight requirements for household garbage and properly bundling your branches and debris:

  1. Household garbage must be placed in either containers or bags not exceeding 40 gallons capacity or 40 pounds in total weight.
  2. Tree branches and items such as fence posts must be tied in bundles in lengths no greater than 4 feet and not weighing more than 40 pounds per bundle.
